Israel trip(episode12〜Epilogue)

Continuation from episode 11

Riding camels

After visiting Ein Avdat national park, we went to the Bedouin lodging facility “Sfinat Midbar” for lunch. It is nearby Beersheba.
Lunch was very good.
The facility also provided camel ride service. So we were able to ride camels. It was really a fun and great experience.

Camels are really cute

Jaffa (Joppa)

In the evening we went to Jaffa, an ancient port city.

Simon the Tanner’s House

This is the House of Simon the Tanner. At this place Peter saw heaven open up and the large sheet in a vision.

The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon, 10 and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11 He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners. 12 In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. 13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”
14 “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.
15 But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.” 16 The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven. (Acts10:9~16 NLT)

Heading home

After visiting Jaffa(Joppa),  we had to head home.
One week went by so quickly.

We stayed at 4 hotels (2 overnight flights). I really enjoyed this trip. And I believe this experience will be my food for my soul in the future.

Masada

In the morning  we went to Masada.

Masada is the ancient fortification that was originally built by Jewish people when they were occupied by the Greek around 120 B.C.

Herod the Great defeated the Greeks and made it a refuge for himself.

Masada had been an unknown and legendary place until a German archaeologist found it in 1838.

This fort is well known as the place where the Jewish–Roman War was broken out.(around 66–73 CE.)

As a result, Jewish people were defeated by the Roman empire.

But anyway, they barricaded themselves in the fort for many years. It’s said that there’s palace, Synagogue, large public bath, big warehouses, water supply facilities and so on. It’s incredible.

774
You can use the gondola lift.
789_1
This view of nature is really wonderful.
771
You can see the dead sea from this fort.

DSCN2059

When we were there, A group of Jewish students group came on a school trip. And they began to dance and sing loudly.

Then someone of us said “Oh this reminds me of David dancing in the Bible”. I thought it was an interesting expression.

14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.  (2 Samuel 6:14-16)
797
We met a Rabbi by chance. He was transcribing the Bible by hand.
809
The Jewish set many traps in the fort. This passage come to a dead end.

En Avedat national park

This is a canyon in the Negev Desert of Israel. It’s also an oasis.

What a wonderful scene!

It is also sculpture which was created by God. Anyway we can feel God when we felt the breath of the nature. It’s very important.

Israel trip(episode10)

I haven’t been writing the blog about the Israel trip. Well…it’s because it takes long time to organize the photos. And it also takes long time to write in English.

Anyway,  I wrote somehow today. (But it’s just a point of the trip.)

Wednesday.14th. February. 2018

On the way to Jericho

On this day, we headed to Jericho by bus.

676
The date palm trees at the resting place.
There are a lot of date palm trees in Israel (in Arab area).
678
The tank which became the object.
The deep scars of the Arab–Israeli conflict…

Mount of Temptation

691
Mount of Temptation. Jesus wrestled with temptation of the devil for 40 days here.
692

695
The ancient ruin of Jericho, which is told as the oldest city.

Tree of Zacchaeus

702
Tree of Zacchaeus (A fig tree. Near by the city of Jericho)

Of course It’s not the real Tree of Zacchaeus, I think. But there must have been his tree around here.

1 Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

The Jordan river is not so wide than I expected. But anyway It’s so moving memory to me.

724
The remains of Qumran. Many Dead Sea Scrolls were found here.

What a great scene!

It’s just sculptures, which are created by God.

Dead sea

Then, we visited the Dead sea to float on the water.
It was so amazing.

Israel trip(episode 9)

Well…I’ve been writing the episodes of Israel’s trip in detail.
But maybe it’s taking forever.
Because when I make a sentence in English, I have to check the words and idioms, grammar and so on.
And I don’t have much time.
Now I decided to write points of the trip roughly.

Tue. February. 13th  2018

On this day, we went to the sea of Galilee. It was still cloudy and a bit cold.

507_2

This is the Church of the Multiplication.
Around this place, Jesus fed the 5,000 people by taking two fishes and 5 loaves.

548_2

This is the Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter.

Around this place, Peter and other disciples met Jesus after his resurrection.

‘“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.’ John 21:12-17 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/JHN.21.12-17

556_2

We felt the breeze of the great nature again.
It’s the most important thing to feel God.
And Jesus walked on here.

558_2

Then we went to the Peter’s house in Capernaum.

562_2

564_2

It’s a little bit difficult to see, but we can understand that Peter’s home was big.
There are many rooms. It’s a real Peter’s home. Not imitation.

In front of the Peter’s house, we can see the synagogue. It’s very close from his home.

567_2

The synagogue is real too. It was unearthed.

576_2

‘After Jesus left the synagogue with James and John, they went to Simon and Andrew’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. They told Jesus about her right away. So he went to her bedside, took her by the hand, and helped her sit up. Then the fever left her, and she prepared a meal for them.’ Mark 1:29-31 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/MRK.1.29-31

581_2
The view from the Church of the Beatitudes

At the lunch time, we ate the Peter’s fish.
Actually It’s Tilapia.
It was named for the story of the Gospel.

592_2

‘On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the Temple tax?” “Yes, he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered? ” “They tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free! However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”’ Matthew 17:24-27 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/MAT.17.24-27

606_2

The view from the pleasure-boat on the sea of Galilee. It cleared up.

658_2

After throwing some breadcrumbs, the birds came and flew above us. It was so fun.

Then we went to the St. Joseph’s Church in Nazareth.

626_2

This is the place where Joseph’s workplace was.
And Jesus helped him too.

646_2

636_2

There are various types of pictures of Virgin Mary at this church.
They were sent from all over the world.

Continuation from episode 7.

After visiting the Church of Saint Peter, we headed for Caesarea.

The main road was still congested. So our bus was delayed.
I think that it was just before 5 pm we arrived.

467_2

Unfortunately, it was cloudy at the time.

However, It was so comfortable breeze and we could get the whole view of the Mediterranean Sea.

DSCN1984_2

We took a walk along the beach and got a great peace of mind.
We waded in the sea and gathered shells. And the sea breeze felt nice.

Israel trip(episode 7)

After going down Mount Zion, we went to the Church of  Saint Peter.

This is the place where Jesus was bellowed abuse by Caiaphas, the high priest and his group. And it was due to Judas’s act of betrayal.

426_2
The entrance of the Church of Saint Peter..
Jesus on the left, Peter on the right.

‘Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”’ Luke 22:33-34 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/LUK.22.33-34

(Even though Peter really intended to follow Jesus at the risk of his life, he got too nervous at the last minutes and pretended that he didn’t know Jesus.)

‘A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!” But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!” After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!” “No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted. About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.” But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.’ Luke 22:56-62 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/LUK.22.56-62

There are beautiful stained glasses on the ceiling of the church.

The guide imagined the situation at the time and explained us about it in detail along with the Gospel.
The pastor also told us about Jesus’ love passionately. And I was really touched to hear that.

‘A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.’ John 21:17 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/JHN.21.17

Israel trip(episode 6)

After visiting the Church of the Visitation , we headed for  Mount Zion. It’s a hill located in the southwest of the old city of Jerusalem.

The guide told us about  Zion Gate first.

413_2

We saw many holes on the Zion Gate. That is the holes made by the bullets.
It shows us how severe the Arab–Israeli conflict was.

Suddenly, we came back in the present day. But it’ s a very important thing.
We shouldn’t turn away from the fact that many people became the victims of the war.

I went through very complicated emotions.

May peace prevail on earth…

419_2

Well, as we go a little, the statue of David was playing his harp. We tend to imagine the sculpture made by Michelangelo, but this is a bit different from that I imagined.
Because this statue was designed to represent King David.

There is the tomb of David near here.
But we didn’t go there because we didn’t have much time.

418_2

There is a church called Abbey of the Dormition near Zion Gate.
The Romanesque Revival style church is so brilliant and beautiful.
And it’s also very big!

420_2

This is the Last Supper Room.
Jesus and the twelve took last supper here.
(Strictly speaking, this is not real Last Supper Room. This room was built in the Crusades era)

Jesus said to Judas, “You have said it.You’re gonna betray me”.
(Matthew 26:21~25)
And he also said to Peter, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me”.
Peter said “Why do you say such a thing? I will follow you even if I have to die with you!”.

Israel trip(episode 5)

Mon. February. 12th. 2018

On this day, we first headed for the Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem, Jerusalem.

There were many flowers that look like cherry blossoms in everywhere in the town. That was almond flowers.

DSCN1968_2

‘Then the Lord said to me, “Look, Jeremiah! What do you see?” And I replied, “I see a branch from an almond tree.” And the Lord said, “That’s right, and it means that I am watching, and I will certainly carry out all my plans.”’ Jeremiah 1:11-12 https://www.bible.com/bible/116/JER.1.11-12

On the way, we stopped at the well called Mary’s Spring.

388_2

I wonder if Maria stopped here and drunk from the spring and had a break.

394_2

Even now It looks clean water. But actually we’d better not drink it. We can just wash our hands.

403__2

After climbing up the slope,we arrived at the Church of the Visitation.

This church was built as a tribute to Mary’s visiting with Elisabeth (the mother of John the Baptist).

It means Elizabeth ‘s house (Zakariya’ s house) was around here.

It is located about 120 kilometers from Nazareth. The guide said “So actually Mary must have come here by riding a colt… and she had to go along rough roads “.

The inside of the Church is like this. It looks like typical of Catholic.

This is the Japanese language version.

By looking at these “prayers of Mary ” we can feel cross-border and timeless faith.

Israel trip(episode4)

Continuation from episode 3

On our way to the next destination, we went to a souvenir shop managed by Arab Christian.

314_2

This is a carved wooden “last supper” . I couldn’t buy it. Because it’s too big and expensive for me.But it was somehow interesting. Because it is made exquisitely.
There were many wood carvings and other Catholic-style souvenirs here.

I bought some key holders for my friends. The shop had many good key holders.

322_2

When we walk down the streets there were many paintings as might be expected of holy place.

By the way, there was a temple across the street from the Church of the Nativity.

I asked a man that what is that building, then he said to me “Take a look at the mark of the moon, I think it’s a Muslim temple”.

347_2

Indeed, the holy place Israel is mixed in various cultures and religions.

Then we went to the Chapel of the Shepherd’s Field.

353_2

This chapel was built to commemorate the Angel who had announced to the shepherds the Savior’s birth.

The mural paintings inside of the church are beautiful.

361_2

363_2

This picture clearly shows that Jesus was born in the cave.

366_2

The chapel was very impressive.

369_2

It’s like this.

We sang a hymn around here.

It was not decided at first. But suddenly the pastor said “Let’s sing a hymn here” .

And we sang “Because He Lives” It ‘s a beautiful and powerful hymn song. I was so moved.

And I recall that we saw a real shepherd and a flock of sheep around here.

The guide’s wife found that and she called together us saying ” Come on! Come here, it’s really rare”.

DSCN1938_2

I was good to have a camera.

I quickly zoomed and took a photo.

After that we headed to the Via Dolorosa.

A lot of cars run in main road in Israel now. And sometimes It causes traffic congestion.
I saw many Japanese cars like Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, etc from the window of the bus.

Because of the traffic congestion we were late for arriving at the Via Dolorosa. It was about the beginning of the sunset.

374_2

The Via Dolorosa where Jesus went up holding a heavy cross with all his might is now a shopping street.

We didn’t have much time. So we went down the street instead of going up.

371_2

And we went to the Church of the Holy sepulcher.

This is the place where there was once the grave of Jesus.
Now there is a building called the Aedicula. We didn’t enter because we don’t have much time. But a lot of people were in line to worship.

DSCN1949_2

There were murals painting described about Jesus’s burial.

Then we went to the Wailing wall.

DSCN1952_2

We have to wear a white cap called Kippah to enter the square.

I am a Christian, but I prayed with my hand on the wall. And I rolled up the small paper on which I wrote a wish. There was a lot of paper clogged in the gap between the stones.

011

Originally, this is the Temple in Jerusalem.

Stones are piled up.
The big stones were piled in ancient. The smaller stones were added to the modern era.

By the way, there was a checkpoint before entering into the Wailing Wall.

We had to take off the mobilephone, belts ,shoes , things made of metal etc.

DSCN1942_2

That was our first day of Israel.

I was exhausted because I was short of sleep, but I was fulfilling as if everything was in my dreams.

When I walked down the street around the Tower of David , the pastor called to me from behind.
And he said with a light laugh “Are you allright?”.
I said “Yeah I’m okay. But a little bit sleepy”.
And he said “But it’s a great trip isn’t it?”.
“Yeah off course!” I said.
He said “This is not by chance. You are called here.Everything is meaningful.”
I said. “Yeah I really think so.Thank you so much”.

I thought like this.
“I am in the holy place now. I’m in the place where Jesus was walking “(though it took more than 2000 years time).

Israel trip(episode3)

Well, as we went down from the olive mountain there was a lot of ancient Jewish tombs around the foot of the mountain.

DSCN1923-2

I think that this signboard was related to that. The guide taught us a lot, but I ‘m sorry I don’t remember well.

But we can see “TOMB OF THE PROPHETS H…” on this green sign board. So this tomb is probably the famous prophet’s tomb like Haggai , Zechariah,Malachi…

I think Hebrew letters are unique. I feel their letters are somewhat similar to Japanese katakana and Korean Hangul.

273_2

We saw almond blossoms in many places.

On the way to Gethsemane, we saw a church called “Domimus Flevit Church” on our right side.
This is the place where Jesus cried sadly. Because he noticed about the end of the Jerusalem temple.

※ Luke 19: 41 ~ 44, Mark 13: 1 ~ 2

We didn’t have time to go there this time. We just kept going down the slope.

276-2

Well, this is the Gethsemane. The place where Jesus prayed so hard before he got caught. We imagined the Apostles fell asleep around here when Jesus was praying.

280 (3)

(The planted trees are olive trees.)

Matthew 26:40-

But the Guide said to us like this.
“They must have been quite tired. Because they drank and ate a lot at the Passover Festival.”

DSCN1936-2

There is a catholic church called “Church of all nations” right next to the garden of Gethsemane.

DSCN1930-2

Just around this point, Jesus fell on his face and prayed so hard.

Matthew 26:39

And then we went to the Church of the Nativity.

This is the place where Jesus was born.

328-2

333-2

Catholic Church and Greek Orthodox Church and Armenian Apostolic Church manage here together.

339-2

This is the place where baby Jesus slept in a manger.

Originally this place was inside of the cave.

343-2

This is the statue of Hieronimus (Jerome 347~420)out side of the church.
You don’t need to be scared at all.
He translated the Bible into Latin language for the first time.
A widow supported him financially to translate. But she died in the disease.
He felt very sad and he couldn’t help keeping her skull during his life.

It’s a very sad story… But maybe it’s a kind of timeless emotion.

Then the pastor said to the guide like this.
“Every time you come here you always sing “Hone made aishite” . Shall we sing it today?”
(”Hone made aishite” is an old Japanese popular song. It’s an Enka song. That means “Love me to the bone”)
Then the guide said “Yeah,Let’s sing!”.

Most of young people don’t know the song at all.
So some of us were bewildered.
But I knew that song somehow.
So I sang the chorus with them.

Then, some of the other foreigners mistook the song as a hymn and clapped saying “wonderful!”.

I said in my mind, “No, that’s not a hymn at all”.  XD
